Dear
Viewer,
This collection was put together to document the life works of my uncle,
Claude J. Falcone. He would only loan his paintings to people because
he felt that no one could attach to them the same value that he did. I
grew up looking at these paintings. I have borrowed several of these paintings
over the years and have a particular attachment to several of them.
I apologize for cropping out edges of paintings. I tried to avoid cropping
as much as possible, but many of the paintings were poorly framed and
I thought they should be viewed on their own merit, not the quality of
the frame.
His work was photographed with a 35mm Minolta camera with incandescent
work-lights. Several pieces show hot spots which I could not avoid because
of glass and varnish. Certain works with a high gloss finish or behind
glass were shot at an angle. Some of the paintings had basement mold which
was cleaned first with water by Norma Falcone. The entire job took several
hours and we shot them by size and shape.
Only one painting is out of focus and I hope to shoot this one again.
I also hope to photograph the paintings in the possession of Nick Falcone
Sr. and David Falcone.
The paintings can be broken down into several types: nature scenes, landscapes,
abstract shapes, cubist type work, still lives, portraits, early Mexican work, opera and ballet scenes. |
I found that he was influenced by a variety of sources, including Cézanne,
Picasso, Mondrian, Van Gogh, Chagall and Degas. He experimented with the
use of thick applications of paint, oil wash techniques, various varnish
finishes and it seems he sometimes painted over pre-existing paintings
to create something new.
The Mexican-type paintings were done early-on when he was an exchange
student in Mexico. The ones of backstage theatrical subjects were painted
during the time he worked in the opera and ballet in the early 50's. His
more recent work includes most of the abstract subjects. The largest painting
is the purple and yellow "Resurrection" painting which is about
5x 5-1/2 feet. His work really slowed down after his heart problems in
1980. Most of his work was done from art college to 1978, but I'm guessing.
This record is not by any means perfect, but it is a labor of love. It
brings me closer to his thinking process. He taught me that every painting
is a problem. By documenting this body of work, I saw his mind at work
and this gave me a certain level of satisfaction. I hope that you enjoy
viewing his work and thinking about happier times we spent together with
him.
